# Recordings and data

> What is recorded, how it is protected, and how long it is kept.

## Recording

Recording is on by default. You can turn it off for each agent.

Callers hear a recording notice on every call, inbound and outbound. The notice cannot be turned off.

> [!NOTE]
>
> You tell your own staff that calls are recorded. Some states require everyone on a call to agree to recording. Check the rules for your situation.

## Where and how it is stored

* Customer data stays in the region you chose when you signed up (US, EU or APAC).
* Recordings are encrypted before they are stored, with a separate key for each customer.
* Browser call audio is encrypted in transit between the browser and Larynth (DTLS-SRTP).

## How long it is kept

| Data | Default |
| - | - |
| Recordings | 90 days |
| Transcripts | 1 year |
| Call metadata, consent, Do-Not-Call and compliance records | 5 years |

You can shorten the retention of recordings and transcripts. Compliance records cannot be deleted by you.

## Reading recordings

`GET /v1/calls/{call_id}/recordings` lists the recordings for a call, with their `state`, size and `retention_until`. A recording moves through `pending`, `uploaded` and `verified`, or ends as `failed` or `purged`.

`GET /v1/recordings/{id}/audio` streams the audio as WAV. Each access is logged.

## Training

Your calls are not used to train models unless you opt in. It is off by default.
