# Phone numbers

> Order a number, route it to an agent, or forward your existing number.

A phone number sends inbound calls to an agent, and is the caller ID for outbound calls. Larynth numbers are US and Canadian. A number costs \$2 per month.

## Ordering

Search with `GET /v1/numbers/available`, filtering by country and area code. Then order one with `POST /v1/numbers`. Ordering is asynchronous: the number starts as `ordering` and becomes `active` when it is ready.

## Routing

Each number has one routing choice, set in `route_type`:

| `route_type` | What happens to an inbound call |
| - | - |
| `assistant` | The agent in `assistant_id` answers. |
| `forward` | The call is forwarded to `forward_to_e164`. |
| `none` | Calls are not answered. |

Change routing at any time with `PATCH /v1/numbers/{id}`.

## Keep your existing number

You can keep your current business number and forward calls to a Larynth number. Larynth does not port numbers yet. See [Forward your number](https://docs.larynth.com/guides/forward-your-number.md).

## Releasing a number

`DELETE /v1/numbers/{id}` releases a number. It is asynchronous, and the status moves through `releasing` to `released`.

## Number status

`ordering`, `active`, `suspended`, `releasing`, `released` and `failed`.

## Emergency numbers

Outbound calls to emergency numbers (911) are blocked.
